The Spartan ATS Power Dual Controller (TS5500) is a 120V single-phase transfer switch designed to automatically manage power sources between utility power and a backup generator. In this analysis, we will discuss the key features, advantages, and disadvantages of this transfer switch to help you make an informed decision.
1. Key Features:- Automatic transfer switch (ATS) with dual controllers
- 120V single-phase power
- Compatible with most standard generators
- NEMA L14-30R and L5-30R receptacles
- Manual utility input and manual generator input selector
2. Advantages:a. Dual controllers: The TS5500 comes with two controllers, which ensures redundancy and increased reliability. If one controller fails, the other one can take over.
b. Automatic operation: This transfer switch automatically switches between power sources based on utility power availability and generator power availability, ensuring a seamless power transition.
c. Compatibility: The TS5500 is compatible with most standard generators, making it a versatile choice for various backup power applications.
d. Ease of installation: This transfer switch is relatively easy to install, especially when compared to larger, more complex systems.
3. Disadvantages:a. Limited power capacity: With a maximum capacity of 55 amps, the TS5500 may not be suitable for larger homes or businesses that require more power.
b. Manual utility input selector: While the manual utility input selector allows for utility power testing, it may not be as convenient as an automatic utility power disconnect.
c. No remote monitoring capability: The TS5500 does not have remote monitoring capabilities, which means users cannot monitor the status of the transfer switch or generator from a distance.
4. Conclusion:The Spartan ATS Power Dual Controller (TS5500) is an excellent choice for homeowners and small businesses that require automatic power transfer between utility power and a backup generator. Its dual controllers ensure reliability, and its compatibility with various generators adds versatility. However, its limited power capacity may not make it suitable for larger installations, and the lack of remote monitoring capabilities could be a drawback for some users.
5. Recommendation:If you are looking for a reliable and versatile automatic transfer switch for a smaller-scale power backup application, the Spartan ATS Power Dual Controller (TS5500) is an excellent choice. However, consider other options with more power capacity and remote monitoring capabilities if you have larger power requirements or need to monitor your system from a distance.
I have seen people use this with battery switching .e. I have used these with both 12V and 24V batteries solar systems, it probably works the same 48 volt systems but never tried so dont know if controller set points go that high. This is how you use this, or at least I used it. This significantly boosts your system reliability and gives you some warning that something is wrong, while keeping refrigerator cold.
The purpose of this is load shedding. This is for ONE ATS ONLY, not two, even though two are pictured. If the battery drops below 24 volts you switch to alternative supply. What this means is that things are not critical like lights or computers etc shut down once battery voltage too low, but refrigerators keep running until the dead.
This can switch either 120v AC or DC loads. Once battery voltage recovers from your recharging efforts then it switches back automatically. They are identical in every way. You program the low voltage switchover and recovery from control panel.
